McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act exists to ensure students experiencing homelessness have immediate and equal access to public education.

The term “homeless children and youth”, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Assistance Act, are individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes -

•  youth that are temporarily sharing a residence with a family or individual at any time during the school year due to the loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason.
•  youth that are living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodation.
•  youth that are living in substandard housing or abandoned buildings that are not deemed to be “fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residences.”
•  youth that are living in shelters or transitional housing that includes emergency shelters, family shelters, domestic violence shelters, youth shelters, and transitional housing programs.

Students that are McKinney-Vento eligible by the above criteria will receive free school meals. Other assistance is available as needed. For more information, contact Buddie Groom at buddie.groom@earlyisd.net
